On 10 June 1878, the League of Prizren is established. Abdyl Frashëri addresses the gathering of patriots in Prizren, presenting the demands of the Albanian people. At the Congress of Berlin, the European Great Powers commit what the film describes as a historic injustice by denying Albania’s existence in order to satisfy the expansionist ambitions of the Balkan states. The League rejects the decisions of the Congress of Berlin. Albania protests. Istanbul orders the transfer of Plav and Gusinje to Montenegro and dispatches Manxhar Pasha to implement the decision, but he encounters firm opposition from patriots including Abdyl Frashëri and A. Koronica. The insurgents kill Manxhar Pasha. Sami Frashëri declares that the Albanian League is not a Muslim organization but a movement seeking Albania’s independence. The League sends delegations headed by Abdyl Frashëri to five major European capitals. Montenegro continues its efforts to obtain Plav and Gusinje, awarded by the Congress of Berlin. Portraits of Albanian fighters. Istanbul sends Muhtar Pasha to accomplish what Manxhar Pasha failed to achieve. Albanian patriots H. Xeka, Ali Gucia and J. Ferri assume leadership of the popular forces. The Italian Count Corti proposes that the predominantly Catholic regions of Hoti and Gruda be ceded to Montenegro, but the inhabitants take up arms. A defensive league is formed in Shkodër under the command of Hodo Sokoli. In the Battle of Rzhanica, the Montenegrin forces are repelled. The League also defends Albanian territories in the south. In 1880, the Assembly of Gjirokastër approves the programme presented by Abdyl Frashëri for the establishment of an Albanian government independent of the Ottoman Empire. Europe and Istanbul decide that Ulcinj should be ceded to Montenegro. Dervish Pasha advances with twenty-one battalions. After fierce fighting, Ulcinj is handed over to Montenegro. Abdyl Frashëri proclaims a provisional government. In 1881, the forces of the League liberate several towns. Istanbul dispatches military forces to suppress the League. Bloody battles follow. Albanian forces are led by S. Vokshi, A. Ibra, M. Sokoli and others. The uprising is crushed, but the Albanian people’s spirit of freedom endures. |
